The open-source world builds extraordinary things quietly. For every category of Mac software there is a handful of projects that rival — or surpass — the best commercial alternatives, but they are scattered, underdocumented, and easy to miss. OpenSetApp is a small, deliberate antidote to that signal-to-noise problem: a tightly curated vault where every pick has been vetted for craft, reliability, and long-term care.
Craft first
Every app in the vault is beautifully made. Interface, interaction, and attention to detail matter as much as functionality.
Actively maintained
No graveyard projects. Every pick has a living repository with recent commits and genuine stewardship.
macOS-native feel
Runs on modern macOS without friction. Cross-platform is fine when it doesn’t compromise the Mac experience.
Free forever
Truly open source with a permissive license. No trial walls, no subscriptions, no accounts.
OpenSetApp is a static Astro site. A build-time pipeline reads a hand-edited seed of selected projects, enriches each entry via the GitHub REST API (stars, license, latest release, macOS download URL), and writes a single JSON file consumed at build time. No runtime database, no server, no tracking — the whole site is a pile of static HTML served from Cloudflare.
Know an exceptional open-source Mac app that belongs in the vault? Suggestions are always welcome and personally reviewed. The bar is deliberately high — only the most beautifully crafted, actively maintained projects make the cut.
Fin.
OpenSetApp is itself an open-source project and is not affiliated with any commercial entity. It exists because exceptional software deserves an audience.
