§ Research method

A reviewable catalog of open alternatives.

OpenSetApp is an independent comparison of popular Setapp apps and free, open-source projects with documented macOS support. It shows the evidence and limitations behind each pick.

§ 01 — Why

Open-source replacements can be difficult to compare because license, release, download, and macOS support details live in different places. OpenSetApp brings those signals into one dated record. A listing is a research lead, not a guarantee that every workflow or future release will match the Setapp app.

§ 02 — The bar
01

Source available

The project must publish source code and license evidence that can be reviewed. Mixed or unusual licensing is called out rather than simplified.

02

Free at review time

A usable no-cost path must be documented when checked. Packaging, hosted services, or optional features may still have costs.

03

Documented macOS path

The project must document a native, browser, command-line, server, or other practical way to use it from macOS.

04

Evidence and caveats

Repository, license, release, download, and project pages are dated. Known gaps and setup tradeoffs stay visible.

§ 03 — How it's built

OpenSetApp is a static Astro site backed by a versioned cohort of exactly 50 Setapp Membership apps that support Mac. Selection takes the eligible top-rated prefix inside fixed major-category quotas; subcategories are recorded afterward for audit and never displace a more popular app. Isolated research workers propose three eligible alternatives per app; scheduled refreshes update project metadata and media. Validation produces a source-controlled static snapshot.

§ 04 — Suggestions

Know a relevant open-source Mac project that is missing? A useful suggestion includes the official repository, license, macOS instructions, no-cost access path, and any important limitations that should appear in the comparison.

§ 05 — Privacy

The site is hosted by Cloudflare and may load Cloudflare Web Analytics to measure aggregate traffic and performance. Cloudflare therefore processes ordinary connection and usage data for hosting, security, and analytics.

OpenSetApp also loads Google Analytics 4 by default to measure aggregate page views, scrolling, and outbound link activity. Google Analytics may set first-party cookies such as _ga and process browser, device, network, and page information. Within the site's analytics settings, advertising storage, advertising user data, personalization, and Google signals remain disabled. You can opt out at any time through “Analytics settings” in the footer; choosing “Essential only” stops Google Analytics and removes its known cookies. The site operator is the controller for this use. The current GA4 property retains cookie-associated event data for 2 months and user data for up to 14 months; aggregate standard reports are not governed by those event-level retention controls. See Google's Privacy Policy. OpenSetApp does not operate user accounts or its own cross-site tracking features.

Catalog homepages may show one labeled responsive ad served by Google AdSense; automatic ads are disabled. Google and its advertising partners may process browser, device, network, page, approximate location, and consent information, and may use cookies or local storage to select, deliver, and measure ads. Where required, Google's certified consent message collects advertising choices separately from the site's Analytics settings. See Google's Privacy Policy.
